Show me Tell me Questions
(Toyota Yaris.)

In your practical driving test, you will be asked two 'show me tell me' questions about safety and maintenance checks on your car. Getting one or both of them wrong will count as a driving fault in your test.

Q1. Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine coolant Level, and tell me how you would check the engine has the correct level of coolant.
Answer.
Identify the coolant tank and check the max / min markings. If the coolant is below the min mark then more coolant must be added. To do this unscrew the cap and fill with clean water until the max mark is reached.

Q2. Open the bonnet, identify where the brake fluid reservoir is and tell me how you would check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid.
Answer.
Identify the brake fluid reservoir and check the fluid level against the
Max / min marks.

Q3. Open the bonnet, identify where the windscreen washer reservoir is and tell me how you would check the windscreen washer level.
Answer.
Identify the washer reservoir and explain how to check the level.

Q4. Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine oil level and tell me how you would check that the engine has sufficient oil.
Answer.
Identify the dipstick, and explain that you would pull out the dipstick and check the oil level against the max / min markings.

Q5. Show me / explain how you would check that the power assisted steering is working before starting a journey.
Answer.
If the steering becomes heavy the steering may be faulty. Before starting a journey two simple checks can be made. 1) Gentle pressure on the steering wheel, maintained whilst the engine is started, should result in slight but noticeable movement as the system begins to operate. 2) Turning the steering wheel after just moving off will give an immediate indication that the power assisted steering is functioning correctly

Q6. Show me how you would check that the horn is working (off road only)
Answer.
Press the horn and listen.

Q7.
Show me how you would check that the break lights are working on this car. (I can assist you, if you need to switch the ignition on please don’t start the engine).
Answer.
Operate the brake pedal, you could make use of reflections in windows, garage doors etc. or ask someone to help. (You will not need to turn ignition on, no need to start the engine)

Q8. Tell me how you would check that the brakes are working before starting a journey.
Answer.
As you move off check the brakes. They should not feel spongy and the car should not pull to one side.

Q9. Tell me how you would check that the headlights and taillights are working.
Answer.
Turn on the lights, walk around the car and check that the lights are working. (You will not need to turn ignition on, no need to start the engine)

Q10. Show me how you would check that the direction indicators are working correctly.
Answer.
Activate the indicators or hazard warning lights and walk around the car making sure all indicators are working correctly. (The ignition will need to be turned on to activate the indicators, no need to start the engine. However to activate the hazard warning lights the ignition does not need to be turned on).

Q11. Tell me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressure for this car and how tyre pressure should be checked.
Answer.
Information will be found using the car manufacturer’s manual. Check the tyre pressures by using a reliable pressure gauge when the tyres are cold. Don't forget the spare tyre and remember to replace the valve caps.

Q12. Tell me how you would check the tyres to show they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road.
Answer.
A safe tyre will have no cuts or bulges. The tread depth must be at least 1.6mm across the central ¾ of the breadth of the tyre, and around its full circumference.

Q13.Show me how you would check the parking brake for excessive wear.
Answer.
Apply the parking brake. When it is fully applies it should secure itself, and it is not at the end of its working travel.

Q14. Tell me how you would make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash.
Answer.
The head restraint should be adjusted so the rigid part of the head restraint is at least as high as the eye or top of the ears, and as close to the back of the head as is comfortable.

Q15. Show me how you would clean the windscreen using the windscreen washer and wipers.
Answer.
Operate the control to wash and wipe the front windscreen (The ignition will need to be turned on, do not start the engine).

Q16. Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with the anti lock braking system.
Answer.
A warning light will illuminate on the dashboard if there is a fault with the anti lock breaking system.

Q17. Show me how you would switch your headlights from dipped to main beam and explain how you would know the main beam is on whilst in the car.
Answer.
Operate the switch, a main beam warning light will illuminate on the dashboard.

Q18. Show me how you would switch on the rear fog lights and explain when you would use them.
Answer.
Headlights must be turned on first. Operate the switch for the fog lights a light will be displayed on the dashboard. Fog lights must only be used when visibility is reduced to 100metres or less.

Q19. Show me how you would set the demister controls to clear all of the windows effectively, this should include both front and rear screens.
Answer.
Set all relevant controls including, fan, temperature, air direction, air conditioning. Heated rear window.
